Approach GMAT Prep Differently

Understanding GMAT Essay Prompt

The GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) presents you with a single essay prompt that requires you to analyze the reasoning behind a given argument, not agree or disagree with it. Your task is to critique the logic, spot flaws in the argument’s assumptions, and evaluate the strength of the evidence presented.

The AWA is scored on a scale of 0 to 6, with two independent scores—one from a human evaluator and one from the automated E-rater®. Together, they assess the clarity of your writing, the organization of your ideas, your ability to analyze the argument, and your command of grammar and syntax.

Many test-takers lose points by making avoidable mistakes: summarizing the argument instead of analyzing it, writing vague or repetitive content, or failing to organize their essay clearly. A high-scoring AWA essay typically follows a simple yet effective structure, an introduction that restates the argument and presents your thesis, two to three body paragraphs that discuss specific logical flaws, and a concise conclusion that reinforces your critique.

Using this format ensures that your essay is easy to follow, logically sound, and focused on analysis, not opinion. Practicing with real prompts and learning how to break down arguments efficiently is key to earning a top score.

What I thought would be the weakest part of my application is now a strength. Whether you're struggling with the GMAT/GRE or just beginning to consider grad school, I couldn't recommend a better tutor to work with than Matt.
Matt is by far, the best tutor I've ever worked with.
In addition to being extremely knowledgeable, the best part of Matt is he will partner with you and genuinely cares that you get the best possible score. Matt will work extremely hard with you and goes above and beyond the expectations for a tutor. I’d highly recommend Matt to anyone looking for help on the GMAT.
As great of a tutor as he is, he might be an even better coach. When there were setbacks in my progress, he helped me keep perspective. I've always been a bit of an anxious test taker but Matt's guidance really helped build up my confidence and I'm happy to report that I got my target score on my first attempt (V41, Q47 overall 710).
Most importantly, he helped me build up my confidence which turned out to be one of the critical factors for me to succeed in the GMAT. He also helped me avoid the traps in the exam and his exam strategy is by far the best i've heard! I would recommend him to any friends who would like to conquer GMAT in a short period of time.
Matthew was an extremely engaging tutor and his teaching methods helped to give me the confidence I needed to succeed (and exceed my original goal score) on test day.
Overall, I could tell Matt really cared about my success and continued to work with me, personalizing my study plan, until I achieved my goal score and was admitted to both schools I applied to
Matt was a great and personable tutor who was full of tricks and strategies for helping to yield positive results. It could be considered difficult to make GMAT studying fun, but Matt finds a way
Within the first two sessions Matt had pinpointed my weakest areas and set out a robust testing plan to address them. This also included the psychological component - Matt pushed me to address my negative self-talk and helped build up my confidence. With his help, I was able to exceed my target and get into my dream schools, including HBS, where I'll be attending this fall.
I am so grateful for Matt's help and would highly recommend him for any GMAT student. Don't even waste your time with other courses or tools. Matt is THE GMAT expert and will structure your studying, homework, and testing plan to match with your individual needs. I would not have been able to do it without him, and wish I had started my 9 month journey of GMAT test taking with him in the first place!
I truly believe that his individualized approach is the most effective. Working with Matt was an investment I am so glad I made and I only wish I found him sooner. He genuinely cares about your success and keeps you accountable. He instills confidence in you and makes sure you know everything to expect on test day.

About Matthew Brandon (Instructor)

My journey as a teacher began with my acceptance into the Teach for America program, a highly selective and prestigious teaching fellowship that seeks to end educational inequality for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The students that I inherited at my Phoenix, AZ high school, though intelligent, passionate, dedicated, and immensely creative, did not have a history of success on standardized tests. In fact, only 29% of my ninth grade students passed the state math test (AIMS) the year before entering my class. To reverse this trend, I designed a specialized test prep class focusing on the skills and strategies necessary to master standardized assessments. After working through my program, more than 90% of them passed the math AIMS.

After three wonderful years teaching high school, I moved back to New York and joined one of New York City’s premier test preparation companies, Manhattan Prep. Armed with 99th percentile scores on both the SAT and GMAT and the confidence of knowing that I had survived an audition process that only 1.8% of applicants successfully complete, I began dedicating all of my professional energy to helping students master standardized tests. As one of the company’s top instructors, I was routinely selected to lead courses for Manhattan Prep’s most important corporate partners, including Google, JP Morgan, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. My students have improved their GMAT scores by as many as 350 points, the equivalent of 520 points on the SAT or 14 points on the ACT, and have attended some of the world’s top academic institutions, including Harvard, Stanford. Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania. My passion for standardized tests and dedication to my students’ success have made me one of New York City’s most sought after tutors.

I now own and operate my own successful test prep company and am working to build upon my reputation as one of the New York’s leading test preparation experts. I look forward to using my love for standardized tests and commitment to providing unparalleled student experiences to help you realize your testing ambitions!

FAQs About GMAT AWA Preparation Classes

To excel in GMAT AWA classes, focus on analyzing arguments and not agreeing or disagreeing with them. Use a clear structure: intro, 2–3 body paragraphs highlighting flaws, and a strong conclusion. Practice with official prompts and get expert feedback to improve clarity, logic, and writing style.

Online courses offer flexibility, structured lessons, and self-paced learning which is ideal for independent learners. Private tutoring, on the other hand, provides personalized feedback, real-time guidance, and tailored strategies based on your writing style. For deeper skill-building and faster improvement, tutoring often delivers more targeted results, while courses are great for foundational learning.

In GMAT AWA preparation classes, it’s essential to focus on developing critical thinking to evaluate arguments logically and identify underlying assumptions or flaws. You should also work on structured writing to ensure your essays are clear, well-organized, and easy to follow. Concise expression, strong grammar, and a formal writing style play a key role in presenting your ideas effectively. Finally, mastering time management will help you plan, write, and review your essay within the 30-minute limit, which is crucial for success on test day.
